An Introduction to the

Youth Marching Band and Colour Guard

 Visit our website www.marxmen-group.org

Who are The Marxmen? The Marxmen are an American style marching Band based in Braintree, Essex. Officially launched in 2001, the Marxmen membership mainly live in the Braintree and surrounding areas. But such is the Band's popularity that members and instructors travel from across Essex. The Marxmen are made up of a marching wind line, marching percussion and the colour guard (dance and flagwork). Each section is supported by our experienced instructors.

What do The Marxmen do? The main activity of The Marxmen is to enter marching band competitions, however we also appear at many Carnivals and Fete's etc. The Group perform a variety of music from shows and films through to classical orchestral pieces. Adapted for wind and percussion instuments, these pieces are then choreographed to put the music in motion. Many hours are spent rehearsing complicated moves to perfect the show. The end result being a unique display of music, movement and colour. The Colour Guard during the "close season" rehearse independently and can perform their own show in a series of Winterguard competitions.

The Benefits. We believe that membership of the Group will benefit you in a number of important areas of your personal development including: personal discipline, musicianship, being a team member and taking part in an activity that has contacts throughout the world. Plus it's fun!

Can you take the challenge?

Welfare. As an independent youth organisation we have a Welfare unit (with trained First Aid Staff) to ensure the well being of both Marching members and the Staff. All of our staff are CRB checked.

Do I need to be a musician?               Quite simply NO!

All you need to join The Marxmen is an interest in music and/or dance, and bags of energy. Even if you have never played an instrument before you can still join.

What we provide. We will provide you with: Tuition, Music, an Instrument, Uniform, and Coaches to Events etc. Also an environment to learn and enjoy playing a full bright and award winning show. And if you have never played a musical instrument before you will be given the opportunity to try each of the sections within the Band (Wind and Percussion). Or both boys and girls may wish to try the Colour Guard (where an interest in performing arts and dance will help).

Becoming a Member. The Marxmen is open to anyone between the ages of 8 and 25 years old. No experience of musicianship, dance or marching ability is necessary.

What will it cost me? Plenty of sweat, enthusiasm... and well a little bit of cash. The first month's membership is free, then as a member you will be expected to pay a monthly subscription... and it's not as expensive as you might think. Contact us to find out the current rates.

Now what do I need to do? If you think that you can cut it as a member of The Marxmen then get in touch and tell us a bit about yourself. We can then arrange to meet you (and your Parents/Guardian if you're under 18). You can come along to a rehearsal to see more and talk to some of the members.

So don't just sit there, give us a call and give it a try!
